About Me

Travel [is] flight and pursuit in equal parts.

– Paul Theroux, The Great Railway Bazaar

Hey everyone,

I’m Reinhard – originally hailing from Germany, I’ve so far visited about 50 countries and territories on every continent except for Antarctica, and I certainly don’t plan to stop until I leave this world for good.

As an archaeologist, I’m lucky enough to be able to travel as part of my job and to experience cultures differently than a tourist would – and I try to apply that deeper sense of cultural immersion to my private trips as well.

On this site, I share destination guides and itineraries with a focus on budget travel and off-the-beaten-path destinations. You can find a few of my focal points outlined below.

Budget Travel and Backpacking

Traveling cheaply has been my style for many years, and I’m always looking to make my money last as long as possible without missing out on any experiences.

To help you do the same, I’ve written a few guides explaining how to save money in destinations which aren’t exactly considered cheap, like the Faroe Islands, Japan or Venice.

Lesser Visited Destinations

I love exploring places that are well off the tourist trail and though I will occasionally write about more popular destinations, you’ll always find a large amount of off-the-beaten-path places on my blog.

My guides cover both lesser-visited countries, like Dominica or Uganda, and suggestions how to get off the beaten path in more popular countries, like Italy, Thailand or Japan. Mainly, I want to show you that the world is full of beautiful places that will never be affected by over-tourism.

Archaeological Sites

As an archaeologist, I’m always interested in both the prehistory and history of the places I travel to, and I’ve written guides about subjects as different as the Khmer Ruins of Eastern Thailand, Prehistoric Rock Paintings in Uganda and Medieval Royal Palaces in Germany.

Hiking Guides

For me, there’s no better way to really explore a destination than by foot, and on my site you’ll find plenty of hiking guides from England’s Lake District to the National Parks of Panama.

In these, I cover both shorter hikes, like the climb to the top of Tororo Rock in Uganda, as well as tougher all-day-hikes, like El Hierro’s transinsular Camino de la Virgen.

Unusual Sights

I absolutely love visiting weird and wacky places around the world and my blog is full of guides to Temples made of Glass Bottles, Abandoned Amusement Parks and Remote Mountain Villages filled with Life-Size Dolls.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites

As someone who’s into traveling and history, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I like to regularly check out World Heritage Sites during my trips. Mostly, I’ve written guides to single sites, like Japan’s Itsukushima Shrine or Poland’s Białowieża Forest.

Over the years, I’ve also checked out several multi-site properties, like Padua’s 14th-Century Fresco Cycles or Berlin’s Modernism Housing Estates, to tell you exactly which of these are worth visiting and which you can skip if you’re short on time.

Whatever you’re looking for to plan your travels, I’m sure you’ll find some answers on my site. Otherwise, be sure to contact me, and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

See you further down the road!
